Ten convicted of digital abuse targeting Brigitte Macron

A court in Paris has found guilty ten people for engaging in the online harassment of Brigitte Macron, the partner of France's leader, Emmanuel Macron.
The defendants faced charges of disseminating false claims regarding her gender and sexuality, in addition to publishing malicious remarks about the pair's age disparity of 24 years.
The court handed down conditional custodial sentences of as much as eight months to the perpetrators. The detailed judgment has not yet been published.
A circulating conspiracy theory suggesting that Brigitte Macron is a trans woman has been in circulation since her husband's rise to the presidency in 2017.
This latest legal outcome in France is concurrent with the Macrons initiating a legal action for defamation in the United States of America against political commentator Candace Owens, who has likewise promoted similar conspiracy theories about the Brigitte Macron's gender.
Their legal filing contends that Owens ignored substantial counter-evidence disproving her claim choosing instead to platforming known conspiracy theorists.
Owens has often echoed these allegations on her show and online platforms, and in March 2024 stated that she would bet her whole career on her belief that Mrs. Macron is in fact a man.
Brigitte Macron initially encountered her now-husband when she was a teacher at his lycée.
The couple married in 2007, when the future French president was 29 and she was approximately 54 years old.
