Elite Athletes Call on Iran to Stop Execution of Champion Boxer

Over 20 Olympic medallists, coaches and further global sports figures have endorsed a letter urging a stop to the capital punishment of a champion boxer and instructor, who is facing execution in the nation.

Growing Worldwide Condemnation

During increasing international outrage over Iran’s expanding employment of capital punishment as a means of repression, the forcefully phrased appeal denounces the Iranian regime's decision to uphold the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was arrested for participating in national uprisings in the year 2019 and charged of aiding an resistance movement. He has passed 60 months in prison, where he has been abused and kept in isolation.

“Athletics is meant to inspire faith, solidarity, and fortitude,” the signatories expressed. “The death penalty of a winner for his political views is a clear violation on these values and a caution to all sportspeople who dares to voice opinions.

Record of Executing Competitors

The letter pointed out that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was not unique and underscored the country's history of putting to death athletes for their beliefs, for example a football captain, leader of the soccer squad, and a women's sports leader, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, an athlete, a young national competitor, was also executed.

Further signatories to the statement comprise a sailing champion, who led the pioneering female-only team in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to earn a renowned yachting trophy; the ex- captain of the soccer side an athlete; and a sports figure, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Detention and Unfair Trial

The athlete was arrested in March 2020. The allegations against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and damage of government belongings”. His sentence has been overturned multiple times but on 4 October it was confirmed on the latest review. His court case was denounced as “highly unjust” by advocates and organizations.

Call to UN

The urging to prevent the boxer's death sentence follows a 2023 statement to the UN high commissioner for human rights, signed by over 100 advocates and groups, calling for action to stop the sports figure's death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

As per data, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has reached horrific dimensions”. In two thousand twenty-three, officials put to death at least 853 people – a 48% surge on 2022. In the prior period, statistics showed 972 deaths, marking the highest number since two thousand fifteen. Over hundreds of people have been executed so far in the current year.

Activists and protesters are targets, especially in the aftermath of the 2022's protests. Experts say the government have used the capital punishment to stifle opposition, instil anxiety among the population and strengthen their grip on authority.
